Fotógrafo de Hoteles e Interiores en el Caribe

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de fotografiar esta estupenda casa en el norte de la República Dominicana. Con  8 habitaciones, creo que se le puede denominar una mansión. Esta es Casa Kimball. 

Mi trabajo de fotógrafo de interiores y hoteles me lleva a estos otros trabajos de luxury real estate (fotógrafo de casas de lujo). Fotografía de arquitectura  aquí en el Caribe. De esto se trató este trabajo.

 Esta bella propiedad, aunque la usa el dueño, la alquilan en temporadas para bodas y demás fiestas. Por tal motivo, los interiores de la casa los fotografié como fotógrafo comercial, de hoteles, haciendo énfasis en las vistas y las camas. En los exteriores fui muy cauteloso como todo fotógrafo de arquitectura en las líneas verticales. 

Toda la propiedad  consta con unas ventanas altas giratorias las cuales al abrirse dejan entrar la constante brisa Caribeña. La principal atracción de la casa es esta impresionante piscina infinity con un color azul osculo la cual termina con el Mar Caribe. 

Toda la parte inferior de la casa excepto la sala de juegos se deja refrescar por la brisa. Ninguna área común consta con aire acondicionado. Todas las habitaciones, incluida la que tiene vista hacia el sur, tiene vista al mar desde su balcón. 

Abajo de la piscina infinita, esta el jacuzzi. Aqui se da un ambiente totalmente diferente al de las otras áreas de la propiedad. El mar y su ruido son los anfitriones.

Antes de fotografiar esta mansión en el Caribe tuve un tiempo investigando sobre su arquitectura ya que me llamó mucho la atención desde un principio. Su arquitecto es Jasmit Singh Rangr. Este proyecto ganó un International Property Award. Esto hizo estas imágenes aún más particulares de lo que yo pensaba.

It is just amazing how one job leads to another. I recently had the chance to shoot an amazing home in the Dominican Republic. It is a peace of art ery well done by Rangr Studio,  an internationally published architectural design firm.  This is Casa Kimball.

I spent 2 days photographing and filming this unique property and needed probably 3 more days to be satisfied. So many angles, so many views! Just amazing. Photographing architecture tends to take away time from me. I totally was involved with the house while shooting. The high and robust windows that open within themselves in a 180 degree circular motion really do let in the nice Caribbean breeze. These windows allow a more pleasant visual transparent effect that semi permits to look inside from the outside.

The main attraction is the amazing large infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The dark blue color this pool has makes it just chic and perfect for this home. It complements its architecture in a strange yet unique way.

Casa Kimball has a rigorous maintenance program. A constant well prepared staff keeps the property at its best year around.  Having these images from a great architectural property such as Casa Kimball is truly a pleasure.

Caribbean Yacht Photographer

Interior photography does have many sub categories or niches. I have the interior hotel photography work, the real estate photography and now the yacht photography. It is all about photographing spaces.

I have to say that modern yacht are so much different than years ago. The decoration is so up to date and actual. The interior yacht illumination has also come to a new level. Here is an image I did in a recent yacht in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. This is the interior of an Azimut 2014 yacht with opened sun roof.

Yachts need good photography because of its exclusive market. Good images are used to rent, buy or sell boats. At any level.

Esta imagen la realicé para el Hotel Embassy Suites by Hilton en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana.  El amplio lobby recibe al cliente con techo alto y colores neutrales.
Es muy importante que el lobby dé una buena primera impresión porque es lo que vé por primera ves el cliente al llegar al hotel.
Además del atractivo visual, el personal humano del hotel tiene que ir al par en dar un buen recebimiento. Estos 2 puntos aseguran al cliente una buena bienvenida al hotel con agrado.

Fotografía de Hoteles Abandonados

Tenía tiempo sin hacer un proyecto personal con la fotografía. Bastante tiempo. Casi unos 15 años creo. Todo mi trabajo de fotógrafo de hoteles y demás tiene mi atención como meta fija en corto y largo plazo. De repente pasaron 15 años. Increible.

Mi último trabajo personal fué el libro "Intended Consequences: crus and calcei" http://www.blurb.com/b/1048026-intended-consequences-crus-calcei . Un libro que duró unos 3 años en realizar. El tema de piernas y zapatos de damas lo tenía en la cabeza desde hace años. En realidad desde que empezé a viajar a Italia y tener el placer de durar horas y horas en librerias enormes.

Antes de este libro, mi primer proyecto personal (aún no concluido) fué de retratar damas de la ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros, Repúlica Dominicana "Damas de Santiago". Antes de este proyecto, puse financiar, finalizar y exponer "Damas de Santo Domingo" cerca del 2000.

Ahora, 2015, con todo el trabajo fotográfico de hoteles que he tenido, se me ocurrió hacer un trabajo personal alrededor de este tema también. En realidad es algo paralelo en cierto modo. Fotografiar hoteles abandonados es como tener una terapia personal bien necesitada. De ver todo lujo y  exelentes servicios en los hoteles más modernos de la República Dominicana y del Caribe a ver propiedades que una ves fueron grandiosas pero en total abandono y descuido es algo impresionante. Al ver y fotografiar tales lugares me pregunto ¿Qué fué lo que pasó aqui? ¿Dónde se fueron los turistas y empleados? ¿Cuándo se fueron? ¿Qué pasará con la parte física del hotel que costó tantos millones en contruir?

En fin, las preguntas son muchas y casi ninguna tiene respuesta. Al fotografiar estos hoteles abandonados, sólo me hace sentir más sólo.

Aqui algunas muestras de la fotografía de hoteles, fotografía profesional de hoteles o como algunos la llaman,  fotografía para hoteles.

Personalmente divido los hoteles en verticales y horizontales. Los verticales normalmente son los de ciudad. Son hoteles de negocios, no de placer. Los horizontales son normalmente hoteles de playa, los resorts, para vacacionar y de placer. Estos últimos tienden a ser muy amplios y hay que constantemente movilizarse en algún tipo de transporte interno. En cambio, los hoteles verticales o de ciudad hay que movilizarse con los elevadores (por esto la palabra vertical). Tarea más cómoda para todo el equipo y crew de fotografía el cual se tiene que trasladar varias veces en el transcurso de un día entre locaciones.

I've done plenty real estate photography in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. Particularly The Bahamas. Being a real estate photographer in the Bahamas is such a pleasure for me because I love the country. On the main page of this website you can see a complete section for Bahamas Real Estate Photography.

But, having my base in the Dominican Republic, it is so strange that I had not done any real estate photography in Casa de Campo. I have shot homes for interior designers and for magazines, but not actually for Casa de Campo real estate. So, after a few calls and some contacts, here are some images for a villa in Casa de Campo.

La buena fotografía de hoteles se usa para vender la propiedad fotografiada. Esta es la forma más rápida y común para divulgar las imágenes en las redes. En los últimos años mis clientes me han requerido también videos e imágenes 360 grados de las propiedades. Con estas 3 herramientas, el departamento de marketing del hotel tienen mayor flexibilidad a la hora de vender. Aquí un video general de un hotel en el Caribe que filmé hace poco.

Why Having Talents in Hotel and Real Estate Imagery is Important

Once upon a time it was considered a no no to have humans in architectural and real estate photography. It was important to show exclusively the space photographed. Fewer elements in the image, the better the space will look and feel.The purpose of the job was to show the space after all, right? I actually did not use talents for a long time because it automatically became the point of attention in the photo, not just because of the person itself but also because of the way they where dressed.

But in many images the sense of scale was missing no matter how good the angle and the illumination was. It could be difficult to really know how big or small the space was. Having talents in my hotel and real estate images really has made this problem disappear. People somehow know automatically the approximate height of a human and can pretty much figure out the sense of space in the image. And, as far as being the point of attention, it can be easily taken care of by having the talent showing up moving. This can be achieved by either using slower shutter speeds in camera or having a blurring effect in post production.

Reportaje fotográfico de hoteles en el Caribe

En la fotografía de hoteles hay que pensar en iluminar la imagen bien para transmitir el mensaje que requiere el hotel o cliente. Pero, también hay que saber bastante de la industria en si. Constantemente se pueden observar errores en las fotos de mesas en restaurantes donde las sillas están debajo de la mesa con el mantel. También es típico observar que los platos y/o cubiertos no están a la distancia requerida del borde de la mesa. Con frecuencia hay errores en la cantidad de líquido que las copas llevan. Si la toma requiere un mesero, este muchas veces esta sirviendo el plato del lado equivocado. 

Detalles como estos hacen que este tipo de fotografía especializada requiera de estudios mucho más allá de la fotografía. Hay que fusionar ambas profesiones para tener un resultado que resalte mucho más allá la parte hotelera de la fotografía de espacios.

Tener una licenciatura en administración hotelera obviamente me ha dado una ventaja con relación a los demás fotógrafos que realizan el mismo trabajo. Corregir estos y otros errores es una constante durante los reportajes fotográficos en los hoteles así como en los rodajes de video que vengo ya ofreciendo a los hoteles.

Resort Photography

Resort photography in the Riviera Maya


Even though the Caribbean has more or less the same climate, I felt totally different when I had to shoot in Playa del Carmen.  No, it wasn't the weather. It was the service.
Although it is amazingly beautiful with its clear blue waters and vast sandy beaches, the high level of service I received in the two hotels I was photographing just was impeccable. 
The high standards that the Mexican people have now (particularly in the Riviera Maya), has left behind the hard times when the swine flu came about on this region.
 This service, in parallel with the Mexican education, great food and the beach front hotels have really made the Riviera Maya one of my favourite places to photograph.

Ciertamente me es de ventaja el haber estudiado hotelería para destacarme dentro de los fotógrafos que hacen fotos para hoteles. Mis clientes no sólo destacan mi capacidad de iluminar, sino también del conocimiento de la industria hotelera en general.

Al hacer las preguntas correctas antes del trabajo, pongo una base de conocimiento la cual es necesaria para que el cliente se sienta cómodo conmigo y mi equipo.

Estos dos puntos dan un resultado eficaz en las imágenes finales a entregar al hotel.

Para ser un buen fotógrafo de hoteles, hay que saber de la industria hotelera. 

Razones hay de más para buscar el fotógrafo apropiado y profesional  (especialista) para la fotografía de hoteles. Hoy en día no basta con encontrar un fotógrafo interiores o interior photographer. Los fotógrafos de espacios son buenos para una gran variedad de fotografía. La de los hoteles es una de estas. Pero, mejor aún es buscar un fotografo de hoteles que sepa de la industria hotelera. Un fotógrafo que esté enterado de los cambios de la industria de la hospitalidad es más clave aún.

Como estudié hotelería y soy graduado de administración de hoteles, me es bastante fácil comunicarme con mis clientes de este sector. Comprendo y sé lo que requieren ya que por mucho tiempo han estado siendo referidos sólo a fotógrafos, no a fotógrafos especializados en esta industria. Los sales & marketing directors de la hotelería desconocen que existe ya fotógrafos especializados en esta área. 

Concluyendo, y como digo yo siempre, si tu Ferrari requiere de un mecánico, llévalo a uno que sepa de Ferraris. Y si tu hotel necesita buenas imágenes que "vendan", llévalo donde un fotógrafo que sepa de hoteles.  

Focusing on the gear for a hotel shoot

I once heard that the photographer's best assistant is the tape. Then I heard it was the tripod. I guess for now, it is in the bags and carrying cases. I have all of my photography equipment in carrying cases with wheels. That is definitely my best assistant. And not only for me, but for my assistant's health too! Rolling cases are what I think every photographer should have. All the weight goes on the wheels, not on your back. Not only your back will thank but also your assistant. I single handed took these two cases on a trip to Cancun and The Bahamas for various hotel and real estate shoots. The wheels made it so much easier to move around! Since I was traveling alone and could not carry any more bags, I had all of my clothes in the Pelican hard case along with 2 monolights. Some photographers make excellent use of photographic vests witch actually can carry many more photo equipment. And, since it is a wearable item, it is not consider as luggage by the airlines (nice tip).

My two only carry ons: a Think Tank bag for my cameras and lenses and my Pelican hard case for the light, stands, tripod, extension, etc. The Think Tank is a airplane regulated size so it goes with me on the plane (in cabin), the hard case goes down below.

Hotel, real estate and interior retouching

As far as I can remember, retouching has always been around in photography. When I used film, my then retoucher could retouch on the photograph or on the negative. I was and still is an art form for me. As with all images before sending them to a client, some retouching is done. Here is an example of an image I did for the JW Marriott Santo Domingo. Small details are all taken into consideration.

Caribbean business hotel photographer.

The Caribbean is one of the areas in the world most visited by tourists seeking sun, sand and beautiful clear blue waters. I have lived most of my adult life in the Dominican Republic,  a jump away from all other destinations in or near  the Caribbean. 

As a hotel photographer in the Caribbean, I have worked with many hotel brands. Many are resorts. Now, since Santo Domingo has become a touristic city growing vertically in the Caribbean, I'm having to shoot what I call vertical hotels. The Embassy Suites by Hilton, Hilton, the JW Marriott, Barcelo Santo Domingo, and know the Crowne Plaza. 

What I mostly like about these business hotels in the Caribbean is that the illumination and decoration really help my photography. These business hotels in or near Santo Domingo are starting to appear year after year. 

Photographing business hotels in the Caribbean has become my latest obsession. So, in only a couple of months I have become a business hotel photographer in the Caribbean.

Fotógrafo de cadena de hoteles.

Al pasar los años he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar para cadena de hoteles muy importantes. Algunas aqui en la República Dominicana, otras en Mexico, particularmente en Playa del Carmen.

Fotografíar hoteles a este nivel, donde son ellos que me llaman en ves de yo buscarlos, es un verdadero placer. Pero no por eso dejaré nunca de "buscarlos" ya que ese es parte de mi trabajo. En realidad, es una gran parte de ser un fotógrafo de hoteles. Hacer el "research" es arduo y conlleva mucho tiempo.

De los 2 últimos hoteles que hice el mes pasado, uno me llamo y el otro lo busqué yo. Pero a ambos los quería en mi carpeta de trabajo. Es más, uno de ellos, el que yo busqué ya tenía un fotógrafo asignado para el trabajo. Luego de una corta entrevista y presentar mi "leave behind", me llamaron una semana más tarde para darme la noticia de que yo era el fotógrafo apropiado para su hotel (Embassy Suites by Hilton).

Como ya he trabajado con cadenas grandes y globales como Hilton, se que tenían un brand book. Y que en ese brand book tendría una parte importante para la fotografía. Efectivamente asi fué. Más de 200 páginas dedicadas a como fotografiar los Hilton, tanto de ciudad como de resort.

Cuando fotografié uno de los Marriott también pedí por el brand book ya que sabía lo importante del look fotográfico que la cadena Marriott requiere. Cada parte del hotel tiene sus particulares para las fotos. Desde los restaurantes, lobby, salones, habitaciones, piscinas y fachadas, todos tienen sus guide lines para la fotografía.

En realidad el trabajo de fotógrafo de hoteles no empieza con la iluminación y una cámara. Empieza con hacer las preguntas ciertas y una busqueda o research del cliente. Luego viene entonces la lectura de los brand book o guidelines si estos son de cadenas.
